If sufferers are living on their own, the time will probably come when it is no longer safe for them to be allowed to continue as they are. There is a limit to the amount of help that can be provided, unless a friend or relative can be present all the time or somebody can be paid to live in for all or part of the day. The time to move will vary from person to person. It is usually easier to arrange for the confused to have help with dressing, bathing, housework, and cooking than it is to prevent them from wandering or being a danger to other people as well as themselves. The risk of accidents is often the final straw for worried relatives. You may decide to allow your relative with dementia to be at risk on his or her own account, but this is neither reasonable nor fair if others may be affected.
